新島は東京から海を隔て１６０km南、伊豆七島のうちのひとつです。島には抗火石と呼ばれている独特の火山石があり、高温で熔かすと美しいオリーブグリーンのガラスになリます。そのことが始まりとなって設立された新島ガラスアートセンターですが、アソシエイトディレクターとして運営企画に開設当初から関わり、毎年海外から作家を招聘してガラスアートフェスティバルを開催してきました。第一線で活躍する数多くの作家たちが島を訪れ、講師としてワークショップを指導し、あるいはアーティスト・イン・レジデントとして滞在し、多くの作品を残してきました。

Niijima is an beautiful island 160 km south of the sea from Tokyo. The island produce a unique volcanic stone called kogaseki, and it will become a beautiful olive-green glass when melted at high temperature. The Niijima Glass Art Center was established by the village in 1988. Since opening, we have invited artists from abroad every year to our Niijima Glass Art Festival. Now, the Festival became one of the most exciting glass event of Japan.Number of known glass artists have visited the island, instructed the workshop as a lecturer, or stayed as an artist in residence.
